چکیده

This paper investigates continuous-time optimal portfolio and consumption problems under loss aversion in an infinite horizon. The investor’s goal is to choose optimal portfolio and consumption policies to maximize total discounted S-shaped utility from consumption. The consumption rate process is subject to a downside constraint. The optimal consumption and portfolio policies are obtained through the martingale method and replication technique. Numerical results indicate the differences between the loss averse investor and the constant relative risk averse (CRRA) investor on the optimal consumption and portfolio policies: the loss averse investor likes consuming more money but exposing less to risk than that of the CRRA investor, and the optimal wealth, as a function of state price density, drops faster for the CRRA investor than that for the loss averse investor. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Lifetime Portfolio Selection under Uncertainty: the Continuous-time Case

M OST models of portfolio selection have been one-period models. I examine the combined problem of optimal portfolio selection and consumption rules for an individual in a continuous-time model where his income is generated by returns on assets and these returns or instantaneous "growth rates" are stochastic. P . A. Samuelson has developed a similar model in discrete-time for more general proba...

Optimal Stopping of Active Portfolio Management

We study an investor’s decision to switch from active portfolio management to passive management. This problem is mathematically modelled by a mixture of a consumption-portfolio selection problem and an optimal stopping problem. We assume that the investor has stochastic differential utility with ambiguity aversion and incurs utility loss from active portfolio management that can be avoided by ...

Optimal Consumption and Portfolio Choice with Loss Aversion

This paper analyses the consumption-investment problem of a loss averse investor equipped with s-shaped utility over consumption relative to a time-varying reference level. Optimal consumption exceeds the reference level in good times and descend to the subsistence level in bad times. Accordingly, the optimal portfolio is dominated by a mean-variance component in good times and rebalanced more ...

Optimal Consumption Choice under Uncertainty with Intertemporal Substitution†

We extend the analysis of the intertemporal utilitymaximization problem for HindyHuang-Kreps utilities reported in Bank and Riedel (1998) to the stochastic case. Existence and uniqueness of optimal consumption plans are established under arbitrary convex portfolio constraints, including the cases of both complete and incomplete markets. For the complete market setting, Kuhn-Tucker-like necessar...

Downside Loss Aversion and Portfolio Management

Downside loss averse preferences have seen a resurgence in the portfolio management literature. This is due to the increasing usage of derivatives in managing equity portfolios, and the increased usage of quantitative techniques for bond portfolio management. We employ the lower partial moment as a risk measure for downside loss aversion, and compare mean-variance (M-V) and mean-lower partial m...
